After you’re finished preparing your steak in a hot skillet, there will be flavorful, caramelized drippings left behind in the pan. It would be a shame to let these delicious bits go to waste. Instead of rinsing them away, try incorporating them into a pan sauce to serve over your steak. Here are four ideas to try:
Classic Butter and Wine Sauce
As soon as you remove the steak from the pan, pour 1/3 cup red wine (Merlot or Cabernet work well) into the pan. Simmer for 2 – 3 minutes, scraping the bottom of the pan constantly. Then, turn off the heat, and add 1 tablespoon butter to the pan, along with a little salt and pepper to taste. Stir while the butter melts, thickening and flavoring the sauce. Pour the finished product over your steak, and enjoy.
Mustard and Vinegar Sauce
This sauce is a bit unconventional, but it will have you asking for seconds. After you remove the steak from the pan, add 2 tablespoons vinegar, 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, and a pinch of white sugar. Stir constantly as you bring the mixture to a simmer. Almost as soon as it starts bubbling, pour it over the steak.
Mushroom and Shallot Reduction
If you prefer a sauce with more substance, this one is a great choice. It takes a few more minutes to make, but is totally worth it in the end. After removing the steak from the pan, add 1 tablespoon butter along with 2 tablespoons chopped shallots and 1/4 cup sliced mushrooms (button, shitake or cremini mushrooms work well). Saute until the mushrooms are tender. Then, stir in 1/4 cup red wine and 1/4 cup canned beef broth or stock. Bring to a simmer, and simmer for 2 – 3 minutes or until thickened. Ladle over your steak.
Garlic and steak pair together so well, and this buttery sauce makes it all the better. After removing the steak from the pan, add 3 minced cloves of garlic and 1 tablespoon butter. Saute gently for 2 minutes or so; do not let the garlic brown. Then, pour 1/4 cup Chardonnay (or another dry white wine) into the pan. Add a pinch each of salt and pepper, along with 1/8 teaspoon of onion powder. Bring to a simmer, and simmer for 1 minute or until the sauce has thickened slightly. Pour over your steak, and enjoy.

Spending time with your partner is important, but sometimes this can be difficult for one reason or another. Perhaps you are both busy or maybe you don’t share similar interests. Well, the following guide will show you why it is important to take an active interest in your partner’s hobbies, especially sports.
Importance Of Sharing Interest
Yes, it is important to take an interest in your partner’s sports hobby, but you should make sure that you are doing this to enhance the relationship between you two. You shouldn’t try to take an interest in his or her love of sports only because he or she is not spending enough time with you. This approach may make you miserable and that could lead to resentment, which are feelings you do not want to harbor.
So with the right motives, the following are some of the reasons why it is a good idea to try to start joining your partner in his or her sports-related hobby:
- You will be able to see a glimpse of your partner in a way you haven’t before. Passion drives his or her hobby, and this should open up a whole new side to your partner.
- There may be a barrier between the two of you because of your partner’s hobby. He or she may want to talk to you about it, but remains quiet since your partner knows that his or her hobby does not interest you. Joining your partner’s hobby should allow him or her to open up.
As mentioned above, do not pretend to take an interest should you be incapable of enjoying yourself. Your partner may see that his or her interest bores you, which could make things worse. But you may be able to reconstruct his or her passion to suit some of your desires.
Sports Bar Fun
Your partner may like to watch the game at home, but perhaps you want to get out. The solution may be to encourage him or her to visit a local sports bar, like Atlas Pizza & Sports Bar. The following are some of the things that you may find there:
- Perhaps you don’t like the sport, but you like to eat great snacks or a good pizza.
- Other people who are not interested in the sport might help you pass the time, perhaps make it more enjoyable.
- Your partner’s passion may not have been enough to spark your interest, but a group of strangers excited over the sport could be contagious, which may give you a little rush, according to this study.

If you are the owner of a pizza restaurant, then you’re aware that your success depends on your ability to exceed your customers’ expectations. This involves not only offering excellent food, but providing top-notch customer service, as well. If you are looking for ways to further improve your business and increase your revenue, then here are some changes that you might want to consider making:
Meet the needs of customers with allergies
Pizza is a food enjoyed by numerous people from all walks of life. Unfortunately, not everyone can safely eat pizza, and this is often due to allergies and food sensitivities. Of course you can’t cater to every single special diet that a customer might have, but you can offer pizzas that can meet the needs of some of the most common food allergies. Here are some specialty pizzas that you might want to consider developing and adding to your menu:
Paleo choices – The Paleo eating plan is becoming increasing popular as a way to induce weight loss as well as improve health. Since the diet requires the avoidance of all grains, sugar, dairy and other common food groups, a regular pizza is not on the menu. However, by making crust out of alternative flours like almonds and cashews, as well as developing a tasty cheese substitute, you could potentially attract a substantial amount of additional customers.
Gluten-free choices – Many people avoid gluten due to allergies, celiac disease, or sensitivities. While Paleo cuisine is also gluten-free, a gluten-free diet isn’t quite as strict as a Paleo one. This opens up the possibilities when it comes to making crust and cheese that can make any gluten-free pizza taste equivalent to traditional choices. Rice, bean and corn flour combinations make great wheat crust substitutes. You can experiment with different recipes until you create a pizza that customers won’t believe is gluten-free.
Improved ways to order
With many pizza restaurants enabling customers to place orders via the internet and their mobile devices, the level of convenience has increased. However, you can make even further improvements in this area by providing customers with the option to order pizza by Facebook or even a tablet kiosk. This would prevent customers from being required to stand in potentially long lines, increasing the chances that their needs will be exceeded.
Surpassing your customers’ needs isn’t difficult as long as you’re willing to take a careful analysis of your target customers. Once you’ve identified your target customers, you can then make some improvements that will attract more customers than you ever thought possible. As long as your food is tasty, then you will also get to enjoy loyal customers, as well the amount of revenue that you desire to bring in.

Making your own pizza is a great way to spend more time in the kitchen and experiment with flavors you may not find on your local delivery place’s menu. For instance, this rosemary and garlic crust is bursting with unique flavor – and you can use the extra dough to make breadsticks.
To make one pizza crust and 6 breadsticks, you’ll need:
- 4 cups flour
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 2 ½ teaspoons (or 1 packet) active, dry yeast
- 1 ½ teaspoons table salt
- 1/4 cup olive oil, plus 2 teaspoons
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary, minced
- 1 teaspoon white sugar
- Pour the yeast, sugar, and ¼ cup water into a large mixing bowl. Let it sit until it gets frothy (about 5 minutes).
- Pour the remaining water into the bowl. Add 2 cups of flour, and mix to form a soft dough.
- Add the salt, garlic powder, and 2 teaspoons of olive oil to the bowl, and continue mixing.
- Slowly add the remaining 2 cups of flour to the bowl, stirring well the entire time. The mixture should eventually form a firm, yet slightly sticky ball.
- Add the fresh rosemary to the dough, and then knead it for 10 minutes by hand on a lightly floured surface. If you have a mixer with a dough hook, you can knead it with this device for 5 minutes.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, and cover the top with plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 ½ hours. The dough should be puffy and look about twice the size it was when you finished kneading it.
- Using lightly greased hands, press down on the dough to remove the air.
- Divide the dough ball in half. Shape one half into a ball (this will be for your pizza crust).
- Divide the other half of the dough into 6 pieces. Roll each piece into a log. These are your breadsticks.
- Place the breadsticks on a baking sheet.
- Combine the remaining olive oil with the minced garlic, and brush it over the breadsticks. Reserve a small portion of this oil to brush on your pizza crust.
- Let the breadsticks rest for 20 minutes, and then bake them at 375 F for 15 to 20 minutes.
- After the ball of pizza dough has had 20 minutes to rest, shape it into a crust. Brush it with the remaining garlic mixture, and then top it as desired.
- Bake your topped pizza for about 20 minutes at 400 degrees F.
Enjoy your pizza and breadsticks meal! The rosemary flavor will make you feel like you’re in a true Italian restaurant. Or, if you don’t feel like cooking tonight or don’t have the time to wait for the dough to rise, head over to a professional pizzeria like Chicago Deep Dish Pizza to satisfy your pizza cravings.Read More
Eating healthy can be quite difficult if you like to go out to restaurants, mostly because it is easy to eat larger portions and binge on unhealthy items. However, there are ways to continue eating healthy when going out to eat, such as controlling your portion sizes, limiting your beverages, and eating a salad.
Controlling Portion Sizes
One of the easiest ways to eat healthy at a restaurant is to avoid eating portions of food that are too large. It is easy to binge eat at a restaurant because you can feel compelled to eat the entire serving size that the restaurant offers you, which can be a problem if the restaurant is offering rich foods. In addition, many restaurants do not offer smaller portion sizes, so you pretty much have to take the portion size they offer.
An easy to way to limit your portion sizes is to skip the entree menu entirely and order your meal from the appetizer section, which often offers quite filling dishes in smaller sizes. Another way to limit your service size is to consider ordering one entree to share with whoever is joining you for dinner.
Finally, you can request that your meal be divided in half when you order. For example, you can ask that half your meal be plated for you to eat at the restaurant, while the other half is placed in a to-go box before the food is even brought to the table.
Limiting Your Beverages
Another easy to eat healthy at a restaurant is to try and avoid drinking carbonated or sugary beverages. In many cases, multiple glasses of alcoholic beverages or soft drinks can end up contributing several hundred calories to your meal. When possible, try to stick to water or low-fat milk with your meals so that you can avoid a massive intake of sugar or a lot of empty calories.
Finally, salads are a great way to eat healthy at a restaurant. Now, this does not mean that you have to stick to just eating a salad at dinner; ordering a small salad to eat with your main course is a fantastic way to limit your food intake. The salad will help to fill you up so that you do not end up eating a much larger portion of your entree than is good for you.
Also, consider asking the restaurant to limit the salad dressing or to place the dressing on the side. This is important, because many restaurants will drench their salads in dressing, which can add a lot of sugar and fat to an otherwise healthy food option. Having the salad dressing on the side will allow you to directly control how much dressing you use.
Going to a restaurant is a great way to experience new types of foods in a convenient manner. Eating healthy at a restaurant is not very difficult if you control your beverage intake, portion sizes, and salad dressing use.Read More
Chinese food was introduced to Canada by the Cantonese that built the Canadian Pacific Railway. Fifteen thousand Chinese immigrants workers laboured to build the railway, which was finished in 1885. After the construction of the railroad, which connected Quebec to British Columbia, Chinese immigrants settled across Canada in rural and urban areas, particularly Vancouver. These immigrants set up restaurants and food stands that sold traditional Chinese cuisine. In many towns, the first and sometimes the only restaurant would be a cafe that sold Cantonese food.
Railway Workers and Canadian Chinese cuisine
The railway workers would set up food stands in their railroad camps. The food that was cooked in these stands began to evolve and reflect the local Canadian palate and preferred serving methods. This is how the genre of Chinese Canadian food was born. The Canadian railway workers encouraged the Chinese cooks to serve the food family style, rather than individual servings.
2nd wave of Immigration
After the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885, the Chinese were discouraged from immigrating to Canada, through a tax of $50, that was due from each immigrant upon arriving in Canada. This tax, enacted in 1885, was later raised to $100 in 1900, and was $500 by 1923, which effectively halted the influx of immigrants from China. The Canadian government also passed the Chinese Immigration Act, which explicitly prohibited nearly everyone of Chinese descent from entering Canada. The Chinese that remained in Canada were excluded from holding any professional positions by law. This is how so many Chinese ended up in the restaurant industry.
Finally, the exorbitant immigration tax and Chinese Immigration Act, were lifted in 1947. More Chinese filtered into Canada, particularly during the 1960’s-1980’s. This wave of immigrants chose to settle in urban areas, particularly Vancouver and Toronto. Both cities had already established “Chinatowns” with built in communities. Often, the Chinese that came over would end up working in a relative’s restaurant to pay off his/her travel debts.
Canadian Chinese cuisine today
The Chinese are the largest immigrant group in Canada, with Chinese, the 3rd most spoken language in the country. Today there are Chinese restaurants in almost every town in Canada, no matter how small. There are many styles of Chinese cuisine, that hail from different regions and cultures of China. The original food-stands, eventually gave way to drive-ins, after the invention of the automobile.

If you are craving some pizza, but want to keep it healthy, try out this great ricotta asparagus pizza. This is a great pizza to make in the spring, when you can easily find fresh asparagus at an affordable price.
If you want to save yourself some time, instead of making your own pizza dough, pick some up at your local grocery store. You can generally find whole wheat and regular pizza dough at your local grocery store.
Before you start to work the dough though, you should preheat your oven to 500 degrees.
Dust your cutting board or counter top with some flour, and use a rolling pin to spread out the dough. If you don’t have a rolling pin, you can use a cylinder-shaped glass instead.
You can roll out the dough into a traditional round pizza shape, or you can go more free-form. As long as the pizza will fit on your baking stone or cookie sheet, it doesn’t really matter what shape you make your pizza.
Once the dough is rolled out, sprinkle some cornmeal on your baking stone or cookie sheet, then transfer the dough on over.
Finally, you’ll want to brush the dough with a little bit of olive oil.
The Cheese Mixture
This ricotta asparagus pizza does not have a sauce. Instead, you will make a cheese mixture. In a medium sized bowl, combine 1 1/3 cup fresh ricotta, ¼ cup shredded Parmesan cheese, 3 cloves minced garlic and about 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley. Mix it all together, and if you want, add in a little salt and pepper.
Once it is mixed together, use a spatula to spread the cheese mixture over the pizza dough. You will want to leave at least a ½ border for your crust.
For the toppings, you are going to need about a pound of asparagus. After you wash the asparagus, you are going to need to get out your vegetable peeler.
Holding the asparagus by the tough ends, use your vegetable peeler to shave off ribbons of asparagus into a bowl Make sure you do not shave off the tough ends; they can taste really bitter.
Once you have shaved the asparagus, add a little olive oil to the bowl in order to coat the asparagus.
Then, take the asparagus and spread it evenly over the pizza.
Now you are ready to throw your ricotta asparagus into the oven. You should have already preheated your oven to 500 degrees. Make sure the baking rack is in the middle; this will ensure that your pizza cooks evenly.
It should only take about 10 to 12 minutes for your pizza to bake. After you take it out of the oven, squeeze a little lemon juice on top, slice it up and enjoy. Have other questions? Need more help? If you want more help or have other questions, click here for more info from professionals.Read More
